Feels rough shifting + 6th gear ringing.

I got this car used and it's my first manual car, so I'm not sure if it's all ManTran cars or just this car, or me.
When I shift, usually to third or fifth gear, if feels like something is in the way of the shifter itself, not lower, but where the rod of the shift stick is right under the boot. It makes sort of a crunching noise sometimes. This happens like 75% of the time I shift into third and about 30% of the time I shift into 5th. No other gears really have this sound, though it does feel rough shifting into first or second sometimes, but I read that's normal.
I asked a couple of friends and they said it doesn't sound anything like grinding.

Also, in 6th gear around 3.1 - 3.3 RPM, there's an extremely high pitched sound that comes from the engine bay. It goes away as I speed up but comes back/gets louder as I near that RPM range and it's ONLY in 6th gear. It gets a bit annoying since around 70MPH, it's pretty prevalent. Any idea?
