Well, I think a huge portion of the Aussie>Subaru misassociation is because of their outback line and how they focused a bit of their marketing efforts on being 'out there' in the bush.
But the truth of it is that Subaru and its logo has connotations of unity- the stars signify FHI's 'constellation' connection with its different parts... similar to how the toyota cowboy hat signifies unity and intersecting circles between the company (inner circle), the community it serves (middle circle), and the world at large (the largest circle)

The word "subaru" means "united" in Japanese, and Fuji Heavy Industries has used the term to describe how the Pleiades constellation is a unification of the stars. Fuji Heavy Industries is therefore a constellation of companies united together.
