If you followed the instructions closely, maybe the different result could be chalked-up to variation between vehicles.
However, it would be really easy for a driver to actually
not stay in 1st for the required time to spin-up the syncro when cold. Next time, consider remaining in 1st, keeping rpm's between 2-3k, for
more than the specified 5 seconds - make it 10 seconds - and report back. If it doesn't slip right into 2nd, you've got some other variable(s) affecting the outcome.
