Do I really even need the door speakers when I have a powerful sub in the trunk? My system/highs sound plenty loud with door speakers disconnected, even when my stock radio was being used. What do you guys think?

Having more speaker points increase the sonic realm around you, it's something hard to explain, but more sources gives one a more 'whole' listening experience. It depends a lot on your crossover and speaker choice, but having the door speakers in conjunction with everything else will fill in that gap near the door zone, which in turn helps everything.. puts less stress on the other parts of the system and in general I say go for it if you have the space and parts available
Sound design is hard for me to explain, since I'm not an engineer but a musician.. but it's something very realizable and felt
