I am not worried about sand and salt anymore as my last 3 cars drove many winters with no ill effects (they are not 1980s Fords anymore). I am lucky to be in an area with pretty good roads though so that could certainly be a consideration for you.
Bad drivers exist all the time not just winter and that is what insurance is for.
Probably the clincher for me not worrying about driving in the winter is that I only keep my cars 4 years and move on to the next anyway so I am not trying to protect it and would rather be driving!
