This used to happen to me every time I got out of a car when I was stationed in Chicago during the winter.
What you have to do is keep a coin or a key in your pocket. Anytime you have to touch anything metal hold the coin or key and discharge yourself by touching the coin or key to the metal.
Another funny thing with that much static electricity is drying clothes. You try to pull a sock out of the drier and the whole load sticks to it. Then pulling the clothes apart makes a light show you wouldn't believe.
