I had opportunities to go back and forth between western New York state and Ontario (mainly Toronto) in the early 1990s. At that time it was a pretty informal process to cross the border. It went like this: "Where ya goin'?" Me: Toronto. Guard: "What's your business there?" Me: Pleasure visit. Guard: "How long will you be there?" Me: Two days. Guard: "OK, drive through." Not these days, I guess.
Oh, wait, I didn't notice the tree lines at first -- I can assure you that western New York (especially Buffalo) looked just like the other side (Ontario) in the winter.

I travel back an forth a lot and let me assure you it is no longer that easy!
Both countries are trying to protect their job markets so they will ask 1000 questions to make sure you are not taking work away from somebody.
I used the border meme to illustrate that Toyota apparently thinks snow stops in Canada since we get the heated mirrors and mudflaps as standard and even the northern States do not.
