And yes, you need to provide your own valid copy of Windows. I used a college program back when I was an undergraduate - many colleges have a deal with Microsoft to offer the OS for very cheap (< $20).

For what its worth I use VMWare 7 on my MacBook running OS X 10.10.2. I initially tried Windows XP without success but once I created a Windows 7 virtual machine all was good.
