I missed the fact that you're in Canada. You guys up there are trained differently. When I was in Ottawa and Toronto, the demeanor of police on the streets was entirely different from any of the numerous places I have lived in the US. They were polite, not just in a Canadian way. Down here there's a swagger that just seems to be looking for trouble.
And police officers here are far from "normal people." The ones who start out normal end up getting twisted by membership in the brotherhood, to the point that you end up with what you think are good cops actually standing up for and making excuses for the scum among them. There's an us-vs.-them attitude, where the cops forget the "protect" part and see everyone, including the people they're supposed to be protecting, as suspects.
