Yep, if those alignment nubs aren't fitting into any holes, you don't have it aligned right. You will not be able to get those nubs into their proper holes unless you file down, cut off, or bend out the bit of bracket closest to the face of the unit.

Note the flanges at the top and bottom of the bracket on the right side of the image have been filed down in the second pic so the bracket itself can sit closer to the front of the unit. Bending them out away from the body would also work.

Your brackets may look a bit different from this (mine do), but you'll have to do effectively the same thing in order to get it to sit in the proper position.
