Forcing buyers to step up a trim level (or to buy optional equipment) to get an AT is a time honored auto industry practice. You're right though, it might be sacrificing buyers to go this route. However I wouldn't be surprised if they did.

Getting 10whp out of the car is fairly easy, but I don't think that is enough to appease all of the people complaining about a lack of power. The power complaint is due largely to the torque dip, which would require more work on the development/production side and have a significant impact on the price of the car. If they only added 10bhp, even 10whp, people would just complain that it's too little too late. I'd guess that it would take a 30whp (so about 200whp on avg) for people to complain less, even then they'd still say it needs forced induction, and I doubt it would bring in enough new buyers (especially at the increased price) to warrant the added costs.
