Conservative as in the needle could be dead on E, and you still have 1-1.5 gallons left in the tank, enough for 40-50 miles. Do you ever want to run your car this low? No, you don't want to harm your fuel pump and suck up any of the impurities at the bottom of the tank, but just saying E on the gauge is not completely E. This has always been the case with cars (due to the nature of how the float in the tank operates), but just seems even moreso now with any of the newer cars I have driven.
