If you can set it on fire, and be like "Oh well, whatever" then you don't need collision. Ie, a 500$ beater. But if it's even a 5K car and you would be hurt/crying if it went poof, then get collision. Also, if you're financing it in any way you have no choice - full coverage. Get gap insurance as well. This covers you for the replacement cost of the car vs the book value (think 1st year depreciation)
