I actually used a small Bessey bar clamp last brake job I did and it was easier by far than the C clamp - probably because it's lighter and easier to get to size. Plus it comes with silicone pads... Of course, if you don't have much of a non-automotive shop, you may not have these just lying around (let alone a wall full... it's a small wall, I swear) IIRC it's narrow enough I was able to depress the piston without removing the old pads, which made it easier to get the old one off.
