Do you live in a high altitude region? Like in the mountains? Above 5000, 8000, or 10000 ft?
Your engine gets much less efficient as air gets thinner. As an aerospace engineer I have some formula somewhere that is a good estimate of your engine power with respect to altitude. When a plane flies above 3000 ft I have to start accounting for the ambient atmosphere doing power calculations. (this is only for internal combustion motors not jet turbines)
Anyways if you are high up, even on land, you can experience a significant loss in fuel economy. I figured ppl in the mountains would have chimed in.
