Previously owned cars: 2011 civic si , 2010 mk6 GTI with DSG and now AT 86, and 1993 Miata 5spd manual.
I daily drive my Miata in NYC traffic and I hate balancing clutch/gas to constantly crawl forward, especially on slopes in bumper to bumper. I bought the AT FRS because the transmission is GREAT! I always drive in manual mode because I like to "control" what gear I'm in. I can't comment on the paddles because I always use the shift knob since I'm used to driving manual. The AT changes gears in 200ms despite not being a DSG. The automatic rev match is AWESOME and addicting ; 90% of the time I engine brake.
The only reason the auto is slower in a circuit is because of the tall gearing. Which I will be addressing with 4.55 gears as soon as I find a cheap set.
I can do donuts, burn outs and brake stands. The only thing I can't do is clutch kicks, and clutch dumps but I wouldn't do them anyway if I had a manual. I prefer to use the hand brake.
