I came from a Jeep and my wife's car is AWD (Subaru XV Crosstrek).
I drove mine all last winter, through every snow storm (lived in NJ), without snow tires.. without issue. Starting is a little slow and up hills is a little sideways, but nothing unmanageable. As long as you understand the cars limits and don't drive like an ass you should be fine.
