Is this a symptom of idler pulley failure, or something else?
check your belt tension , if its a toothed belt it does not need to be super tight like v belt, hopefully you were given tension specs.

a large\long screwdriver can be used as a stethoscope to find noises and crook bearings. crook bearing generally make a grating sound. listen to some good ones first to get the idea of what it sounds like.

stick the metal blade end on or near the bearing\pulley\area you want to listen to , then stick your ear on the plastic handle end. Will consentrate the sound so you can work out where th noise is comming from. obviously be carefull not to stick it to close to moving belts ect.

if you think its an air leak squirt some soapy water on pipe connections ect and look for any bubbles.

did you hose clamp all the lines on\under the intake maifold
