I think we may be closer to saying the same thing then you think.
Taken at face value your definition makes pretty much every car a "toy" for someone. I suppose that is very well true.
Extreme example, a family of 7 with two large dogs may need a Suburban to get around together probably has no need to be buying a Prius, because it is a toy, unless there is another need it meets. (Dad commutes 80 miles a day solo, buys a Prius, or an FR-S for that matter, as a more practical solution, so its not really a toy).
So, in the end, like most all things automotive, its situational.
