It really depends on the type and build of the resonator. I know the HKS (I believe) has 2 resonators in their front pipe, but most others have one. Hi flowing cats will typically do a bit in the noise reduction as well, but you also won't have as much air flow as a straight through design with no cat.

Disclaimer: I'm no expert on exhaust, just going from personal experience and past knowledge.
