Why wouldn't they? Mitsubishi and Chrysler did it with DSM cars... same vehicles, same market, different body styles. Some people just liked the looks of one version over the other and it allowed the companies to sell more units of a single platform instead of wasting money making 2 different cars in the same niche.
Some people are just badge snobs and would rather pay more for a subaru badge over, heaven forbid, a Scion or even Toyota.
