I was in Buffalo NY for 5 years. That place gets good amount snow more than the half of a year(late October to early May). I was driving Eclipse GTS FF with performance tires without problems. Based on my experience , I can say that your driving skill is more important than other variables. Last year was my first year in Fayetteville, NC. I saw a lot of 4x4 trucks that was stuck in ditch.

Priority

1. Safe distance (I see a lots of tailgating in NC even with snow!)
2. Speed (25 to 35 mph max on snow)
3. Proper braking (4x4 will not help you to stop on snow or ice)
4. Snow tire
5. 4x4 helps lunch on snow

A Cat litter bag in your trunk some times saves your time and money.
