Most people like conservative styling. I thought the B5 S4 really looked special versus the A4. It doesn't seem as distinctive anymore (probably due to being able to get S-line trims on the A4).
I was pulled over more in my 1993 Impreza L than I ever was in my 2001 Impreza 2.5RS (with scoops, wing, gold wheels). Who knew that slowing down would mean less run-ins with the law? The only time a cop ever mentioned my car was when I was pulled over in my MKV GTI. He was apparently somewhat impressed that I was doing 80mph by the end of the onramp onto a 65mph highway.
