For routine stuff I doubt the Subaru techs are significantly more competent than the Scion/Toyota/Lexus techs. Oil is oil and nuts and bolts work the same on a Kia as they do on a spaceship and we still manage to fuck those up.

For the complicated stuff ($$$) you want warranty, that will ONLY go through Toyota so you're out of options there.

If you're out of pocket for the complicated stuff I'd go to an independent shop (if you can't do it yourself), you'll likely get the best mechanics and the best rates.

Complicated in my opinion is pretty much anything that moves that can cause problems if not done properly (i.e. entire powertrain from gas tank to rubber on the road, suspension).
