Well, first of all, I read somewhere a while back that the national average for labor at import dealerships is around $120 per hour. They're probably going to charge you at least six hours of labor to remove and reinstall the transmission (even if they only actually put three hours into the job). So there's $720 right there. Then you'd be kind of stupid to have the transmission out and not go ahead and replace the clutch while you're at it, so parts at dealership retail prices along with "shop materials" and such are easily going to put you up over $1000.

Or you can find a local mechanic you trust, order the parts yourself at wholesale and let him charge you a few hundred bucks to install them. I needed work on my Jeep that I couldn't do out in the street in front of my apartment, so I found a small local shop on line that had great customer reviews and reasonable rates.

Or you can take the $1000 you would have spent at the dealership and invest it instead in the tools you would need to do it yourself. You might fuck it up, but you'd learn something in the process. Of course that's not always practical for us apartment dwellers.
