This would indicate putting R&D money in a cheaper more efficient powerplant that may scale up throughout the line rather than a cheaper lighter chassis, but of course, they can do both (*mazda shaved ~200 lbs. off the 3 while dropping the price >$1k and giving it a motor that was only a year or two old).
