What level are you now? The Heroic Strike gives you 3/6/9 coins depending on the level you attempt. The 9 coins is level 28. Fairly easy to solo depending on your level. I did the 6 coin one last week at level 26 without even dying and carried my lvl24 buddy through it.
Aside from that do the level 24 Tiger strike playlist, you get a decent amount of coins from rewards after each strike and blue engram drops if you're lucky. I picked up 4 of them this week and I didn't even do that many strikes.
Aside from a plethora of Legendary Rocket Launchers and Machine Guns I've had to mostly make my own luck. Getting Vanguard level 2 and 3 is the key to getting purples.

Yes, I was excited when I saw the purple engram drop. I was actually farming at the time time and thought, "my luck, I get one to drop not when I'm fighting a Boss but just when I'm running in circles farming". Go to cryptarch and yep, here's another rare item for you. So twice I've had purple drop and both have been deciphered into blues (the first time was right before the "patch" so I crossed it off as bad luck).
I actually did 2 strikes last night, the first was back on earth just because I wanted to get the "don't die on a strike" bounty.
The second one I did was the daily heroic. Got through that one just fine too (did die once because I was trying to upgrade my Defender sub-class, gave up and re-equipped my Striker right after dying so I could complete the strike) but didn't get anything to speak of from it.
I'm level 25 right now, been there a couple of days. Seems like it is slow going right now. Also, for some reason it seems like my Vanguard level isn't even moving. I'm still at 1, been there all week. I swear everytime I look at the progress I've made, seems like that silly circle counter hasn't even moved. I know I need to get my rank up to at least 2 before you can start getting some decent things. I may start doing the PvP stuff more, seems like a good way to increase reputation etc and I'm getting better at it the more I do it. Finally wised up and dropped carrying the sniper when I do PvP, have equipped my shotgun. Much more usefull in PvP.
