You should definitely be using bluetooth, then you can also use all the text/voice commands. See video:

I have a 1020 and it works great with the FR-S head units, far less trouble then that guy had to go through with his head unit. Make sure you're upgraded to 8.1.1/Cyan and you might want to go under bluetooth advanced settings and check the connect another way box if you need it. I most often just get in and say "shuffle my music" and off it plays.
