I do agree that this large piece of plastic does look cheap though. The BRZ one doesn't look much better, but at least it's not trying to be something it's not.

It is intended to be a "T", there is a video somewhere on this forum of the designer from toyota talking about the design of the GT86 and pointed out all the places where they use the "T" shape.
