There are many good oil filter wrenches out there of varying styles, most of which are non-destructive (i.e. strap, cap, band, etc.) but for God's sake, do not use the 'ol screwdriver method. Once you damage the filter, you're stuck until you can get it off. Worst case, leave the old filter in tact, replace the oil anyway and take it to a good shop.
