You can reset the mpg computer the same way as the trip computers. I'm not sure if he did that, but it is possible to have it start a new averaging cycle.
I also believed in doing Fuelly, but I've compared the car's built in averaging to my full tank fillup calculations over a three month period (about 8,000 miles), and the results were within 1/10th of an mpg. I just trust the car now.
