Fair play, missed the tourist from Asia bit, thought he was just in town and potentially not an owner. I'm all for experiencing variety, I know if I went to another country in Europe or Asia I'd sample the local stuff (some sort of wagon/hatch or a kei car), it makes sense to look for an American muscle car when visiting here.
If he is an 86 owner, or at least an enthusiast of the 'light is right' variety a V6 automatic convertible Mustang will be a huge disappointment, especially on Highway 1. Hertz hypes up their 'adrenaline' program offering the big V8's which may be worth it, however they are still A/T's and >800 lbs. heavier than a Toyobaru, all depends on what OP wants.
