This is NOT an opinion. It is fact.

Mechanical skills won't help much when the parts you need still cost thousands of dollars.
The transfer case on my brother's 2009 335i xdrive just crapped out at 60k miles. A replacement costs a couple thousand (I think maybe around $3000?) and the waitlist for them is a couple months, since apparently this is a really common problem. (he ordered the part in July, it's expected to come in mid/late september)
Until then, no ABS, no traction control, no AWD, and worse gas mileage since it's just extra drivetrain resistance at this point. On top of that, his dash looks like a goddamn christmas tree with all the warning lights.
Honestly, the FRS and BMW are very different cars. Do you want luxury? Or do you want sportiness? In my opinion, there are very few cars on the market that actually combine both of those effectively. Most luxury cars are heavy and have no driving feel, but on the other hand, you won't be impressing chicks with a loud, rattly, harsh-riding FRS.
I know this is an unpopular opinion, but I don't even really consider the M3 to be a real sports car after the E36 generation. The new ones are bloated luxo-barges with marginally stiffer suspension and tons of power to compensate for the 4000 pounds they're lugging around.
