Now if you care about actually driving experience it's a tougher choice. I would avoid the N54 engine like the plague (135, 335, 535 etc). I owned a 335i spent more time in the shop than on the road. I would probably also rule out the e90 M3, maybe an e46 if you can do most of the maintenance yourself.
Now the ones I would consider when comparing them with the FRS would be a 328 or a 128. Personally I find the N52 engine to be pretty much bullet proof especially compared to the N54. Personally I find the 328 to be a bit large and soft. I would go with a 128 6spd (the auto is garbage) sport package if possible. I think it would be a tough choice for me between that and the FRS if you can find a 128 6spd for a decent price.
But ultimately you need to drive them both and see what you prefer.
