I remember the first time I drove the FR-S I noticed it doesn't go into 1st even at 5mph, however it starts in 2nd fairly easy, so it made sense to me to just use 1st at a dead stop.
Some cars are opposite, especially older ones. My MR2 doesn't like starting in 2nd, but can get into 1st while rolling slowly smoothly. But anything over 10mph and it's better to just get into 2nd.
