I used to work there - don't anymore (I've mentioned it in other threads), though I left on great terms.
The thing I appreciated, at least at my location, was no one pretended Carmax was anything more than what it is.
It's an "easy" place to shop where everything is laid out, in real time, right in front of you. No, "Let me check with my manager" BS. You see the finance offers straight from the lenders on the screen at the same time as your consultant. And if you feel you've been low-balled on your appraisal, ask to talk to the buyer who did it. Our buyers
wanted to talk to customers to find out what they thought. Do you pay more for the convenience? Absolutely. But you do get some intangibles as well. It's up to you to decide whether it's worth it.
I had customers complain about pricing and say, "Well, I don't need the extended warranty, I don't need the thirty days, I shouldn't have to pay for it." and the simple response was, if you go to McDonalds and buy a Big Mac and tell them to hold the lettuce you don't get a discount either. The price and product is there, it's your choice to take advantage of everything or not.
When it comes to appraisals it's the same in reverse. CM has to turn around and sell the vehicle either on their lot (after spending to recondition) or at auction, and they're in the business of making money. But you also don't have to worry about trade-in games, "you buy from us we'll give you more/whoops, lost the key/nonsense". You want more, put it on Craigslist and suffer the experience the OP did.
