In simplistic terms, in a conventional spoiler, the mounts attach on the bottom of the wing, thus creating airflow separation and thus robbing the wing of downforce (in the area the mounts connect to) while simultaneously creating drag
Swan necks remove this separation by allowing the underside of the wing (where the air will be speed up thus creating the low-pressure zone) to be completely unimpeded with only the leading edge having slight separation as well as a minimal drag reduction
And they
can be made to look pretty lol
