You should set the parking brake anyway, even if you are in Park.
In fact if you park on an incline you should stop, set the parking brake, put the car in neutral, release the foot brake and let the car stop moving as the parking brake sets the car's position, THEN put the car in Park.
Otherwise the tranny is stressed internally the whole time the car is parked.
