I always compare each lap time with the transponder printouts, and have found HLT to be surprisingly accurate. Would I prefer an AIM? Absolutely. But for the price of HLT and an external GPS, it does very well.

HLT without external GPS is a 1hz unit, which gives it a +- 1S range.
Although the lap times are often close, watch the "speedometer" and you'll realize how lacking 1hz really is.
