I know Toyota is a tried and tested brand for reliability but I'm not sure of Subaru and it's boxer engine as no one in my family has a Subaru.

Sure it's good, Subaru is a successful company and has a very loyal following, much like any good brand. They've been pretty consistent with just plain, good, reliable cars for a long time. Just like some families will only buy Honda, or Toyota, some will only buy Subaru. Hell, 5 of my last 6 cars have been Subies, and my wife is on her third. We've been happy with all of them.
The boxer isn't a
perfect engine, but its built well and has some unique characteristics that work in its favor. The only real reliability problem I've seen with any consistency is the head gaskets around 80k miles on the now outdated EJ blocks. Maintain it well and fix things as needed and it'll last a long time, any engine poorly maintained won't last long. The FA20 is a new design, but with modern engineering there's no real reason to believe it won't last 200k+ miles. It's had a few teething issues but even old "proven" engine designs will occasionally have problems.
