Because the thread is polyester conventional dye won't do anything. If you have ever dyed something to have to stitching stay bright white this is the reason. In order to dye it you need to use a chemical dye. '

Before I decided to get a Series.Blue I had planned on trying this. They make a wax crayon like dye that you put on and then add heat from an iron, etc. Should be easier to control and not get all over your seats. However, I don't think you would get good results other than going from red to black like I was planning on doing. Good luck and if you do try and be sure to let me know how it turns out.
