I don't think that's crazy at all. Actually I think it's been proven.

For GTI's, the DSG puts down very similar hp to the wheels as a manual, but is ~0.4 seconds quicker from 0-60 because of how quickly it shifts.

That usually adds up to about 1-2 seconds quicker around a road course.
