Look through that list above and try to find an example of overboost caused by failure of the wastegate.

That doesn't really matter. Preventing knock is all in the tune. Even a bad N/A tune can rattle the motor with knock and spin the bearings(or worse).
I've seen built race engines with fully forged bottom ends come apart due to knock with less than 200 ft lbs at the flywheel.
