There is a small margin for error. Ive never boosted, but I think that there should be some sort of checklist after installs/before dynoing or simpler components. A backup system or two would save alot of headache would it not?
Waste gates are pretty reliable pieces of hardware. I've never seen one fail. Never heard of it even...

You can always incorporate a boost cut into the tune in case of over boost, like the manufacturers do with turbo cars.
