I have these little bad habits that I do from time to time and I know it's not something I should do:
1. when I'm on a wide, quiet road with no incoming cars on sight, I sometime gun it in order to beat the traffic light. So the scenario is I drive say at 40mph and then oh shit light turned yellow, I will then floor the pedal if it's safe to do so.
2. If I'm not familiar with the road and have to do urgent lane chang (ie to make a road turn), I might floor the pedal to quickly give me enough safe distance between me and the car behind me on the lane that I am merging to.

I know I must have pressed the pedal too aggressively because when I floored it, I could feel the engine sort of "caught off guard" and there's like a half second or so delay before the engine revved high and picked up the speed.

And since it's only short burst, I ended up with releasing the gas pedal to drop speed and the engine was still whirring in high rpm because I floored it.

What's the short term/long term damage of this habit you think? Or do you think high revving engine wouldn't mind this kind of treatment every now and then? (Providing I'm not red lining it)
