Not long ago I said the new 2013 Subaru BRZ was well… slow, and by looking at its performance numbers, it somewhat is. 0-60 mph comes up in 7.3 seconds and 1/4 mile shows up in 15.3. I did however mention that its 60-0 distance was respectable at 114-feet, as was its 69.9 mph slalom speed. Well, last week at Mazda Laguna Seca Raceway I had a chance to flog the 2013 Subaru BRZ around the racetrack and let me just say that I was wrong – well, I was kinda’ wrong. You see the BRZ may not be the fastest car on the block but HOLY SHIT was it fun to drive. It’s high-speed turn in was great, it’s got great brakes, wonderful steering feel and even when equipped with the auto transmission and paddle shifters it delivered more track enjoyment than cars three times the price. In fact I was so blown away by this little bugger that I managed to wrangle myself two sessions in it.

The cars interior didn’t disappoint either. The buckets were firm and supportive and at 6’4″ and 240 lbs with a helmet on, I managed to fit in the BRZ with no problem. What needs to happen now (and I’m sure it will) is that we need to see an STI version. Seriously, if that car came equipped with another 100 hp, a nice set of Brembos and some bigger rubber Subaru would have one vicious little hot rod on their hands.
