tl;dr Test drive, they are very different cars. Buy the Z if you want to play with your buddies and you guys actually care about 'who's faster' rather than having fun. Buy the Toyobaru if you're going to drive the piss out of it and actually go to a track or autocross and not just be a fool on the street.

I feel like babbling so here it goes.

1. Test drive both.
B. Test drive both.
C. The Z is faster on paper, if you're going to 'occasionally race with your buddies' (that post nearly made me explode, what does this even mean? Are you going to be like that kid who went to my high school that wrecked his 350Z into an Oak tree and killed a retired couple?) and care what other people think about how fast your car is then this conversation is over, buy the Z. We don't need another post in 6 months about how you're disappointed in the 86 and then see you listing your car with a turbo and $10k worth of mods a year later in the classifieds (see our classifieds).
4. Watch the video on page one comparing the GT86 to the Cayman and 370Z, that's how most of us feel, I haven't seen one serious contradiction to Chris Harris' comments around here.
E. Test drive both.
VI. The Toyobaru is more practical: rear seats despite what some may say will fit four average sized adults in a pinch, rear seats fold flat for decent storage space, most average ~27 mpg and you can get one brand new significantly cheaper than even some used Z's. I haven't looked extensively but the BRZ seems to be a better deal than the Monogram and you won't have to put up with Pure Price.
7. For me, I didn't test drive the 370Z or the 350Z. If I was going to spend >$30k I was going to seriously look at Porsche and the Mustang GT is still the king at that price point as an all rounder. Didn't like the Mustang, the Z is still 400+ lbs heavier than the Toyobaru, I wanted the Toyobaru.
H. Test drive both.
