They don't need to consider anything partnership, they already have their group: Infinity-Nissan-Renault-Daimler.

There is absolutely no problem with building a small sportscar as Alpine (Renault), Nissan (Datsun?) and Mercedes (SLA). But they won't, they prefer building SUVs.
