Hopefully they're borrowing the Subaru philosophy of car design (likely since Subaru did most of the technical engineering). There's a saying "Subarus are like Legos". From the mid 90s to 07 almost everything in the Impreza was interchangeable. Want to put an 07 STI powertrain in a '97 Impreza L? No welding needed, everything will bolt in. Sometimes you need to find parts from the Legacies (driveshaft, rear tophats), and you'll have to modify the wiring harness for the new ECU and engine, but you really can mix-and-match with most Subarus. And that still holds true for a lot of stuff after 07 and
across model lines.
To give a real-world example, when I swapped a JDM 6mt into my USDM WRX, the JDM wiring harness for the transmission was not compatible with the USDM chassis. But I was able to take the wiring harness AND sensors out of my US 5mt and just put them in the Japanese 6mt with no modifications.
If the BRZ follows this trend of Lego-ness (we're already seeing 08+ WRX parts in the BRZ build) then really, any changes done to the car in the future should bolt right into our first-year models.
