I saw others that used solenoids and no cams.
I have a feeling the FIA would ban solenoids b/c they could be alterted for VVT (same with variable intake trumpets). Yet, I'm sure Renault would get a pass considering the current situation. :p

I know CART/Indycar always used traditional cams, buckets, shims & springs to keep costs down. And those turbo V8s were rocking close to 15,000rpm when Toyota & Cosworth were still in the series.
